Peterhoff

Peterhoff

Peterhoff is famous all over the world as a capital of fountains. It was founded by Peter I in 1709 on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. It was a summer country residence of Russian emperors, and in 1918 Peterhof palaces became the museums. The impressive palace-and-park Peterhof ensemble, comprising seven parks with the total area of 1,000 hectares has been created within two centuries. Different remarkable events took place in Peterhof. All the holidays were celebrated with fireworks in its gardens and parks. Now 10 museums and 3 parks are opened for the visitors: Upper and Lower Parks and Alexandria. There are 3 cascades and 173 fountains functioning in the Upper and Lower Parks. The most popular are the Shutikha fountains (joke maker fountains) and the fountains with machinery mechanisms, characteristic for the parks of Baroque epoch.
